Theme Based Learning
Theme based learning is different from the traditional subject based learning we normally see in schools.  Theme based learning applies all academic skills (reading, writing, science, math, etc.) no matter what the topic or theme is.  Students benefit from theme based learning because it reinforces the connection between all the subjects taught in school; and it's fun!
Camp Day
On Camp Day, the morning began with students finding out their "cabin" assignments (students were placed in groups of four).  Each cabin was tasked with the goal of coming up with a cabin name and flag.  After, students tested their money skills by purchasing gear they would need for a day of camping.  Following their purchases, students were then challenged with the assignment of creating a shelter to hold all their gear; this shelter was made out of toothpicks and marshmallows.  Later in the day, students the class read "Don't Feed the Bear" by Kathleen Doherty, and completed their own research about bears.  The final activity of the day was a craft/writing assignment, where students made S'Mores and wrote about the process of making S'Mores.
Pirate Day
On Pirate Day students were on a mission to find Blackbeard's treasure chest that was hidden in the school. Â To find the map that would lead students to the treasure, the class had to solve riddles and complete tasks. Â These riddles and tasks worked on students art, reading, writing, math, communication, and team skills. Â Students were encouraged to dress like a pirate and work together to complete each activity. Â By the end of the day student were given the map and found the treasure chest!
Poetry Cafe
The Poetry Cafe was an event held at the end of our poetry unit. Â This was a day that students were given the opportunity to recite original works of poetry to family and classmates. Â Families were invited to attend the Poetry Cafe via zoom. Â Students were also given the opportunity to show off their money skills by "purchasing" snacks and drinks at our Poetry Cafe.
